Merit Badges

MERIT BADGES

Merit Badges are an important part of Boy Scout advancement. While earning these badges the Scouts learn to develop new skills, to work independently outside of normal troop meetings with an adult counselor and to present his completed work.

Steps in completing Merit Badges:

1. Look at the list of badges that are available and pick one that interests you. There are over 100 merit badges to choose from and you can learn about future careers, sports, boating, etc. This is a great opportunity to learn something new. You must obtain a minimum of 11 Eagle-required merit badges and 10 non-Eagle badges before you turn 18 years old as one requirement of becoming an Eagle Scout.

2. Get approval from the Scoutmaster prior to beginning work by obtaining a Blue Card. The Scoutmaster will sign the card and provide names of merit badge counselors who are registered for your specific badge.

3. Obtain the “current” merit badge pamphlet and become familiar with the requirements. Be sure that you have all of the up-to-date requirements. Optional workbooks can help you organize and document your work.

4. You should contact a merit badge counselor prior to beginning any requirements for the badge and ask for any instructions or recommendations that he may have to complete the work.

5. Read the merit badge pamphlet and begin doing and learning the things that are required. Ask your counselor for help as needed.

6. Once completed, request a meeting with your counselor and take all of the relevant information needed to show that you met the requirements. You must have another person with you whenever you meet with a counselor. Ask the merit badge counselor to sign and date the Blue Card. (First enter your personal information on the Blue Card.)

7. Present this completed card to your Scoutmaster for his signature and processing. He will obtain your badge and provide Council with the relevant information.

Note that merit badges may also be obtained at various camps. You must complete the pre-requisites prior to attending the camp.
